Frequently Asked Questions About the CATAN Board Game
What is CATAN?
CATAN, formerly known as The Settlers of Catan, is a strategic board game that transports players to the uncharted island of Catan. You'll build settlements, establish roads, and gather resources to construct more settlements, upgrade to cities, and develop your civilisation. It's a game of clever trading, strategic planning, and a bit of luck with the dice. And for a fresh take, explore CATAN - New Energies. This standalone game introduces power plants, energy tokens, and environmental events, challenging players to balance resource management with sustainable choices in a modern CATAN setting.
How many players can play CATAN?
The standard CATAN board game is designed for 3 to 4 players. But, if you're looking to expand your settlements and invite more friends to the island, there are expansions available that allow for up to 6 players to join the fun and compete for Catan's riches.
What are the basic resources in CATAN?
The five basic resources in Catan are:
- Lumber: Harvested from forests.
- Brick: Sourced from the hills
- Wool: Taken from the sheep in the pasture.
- Wheat: Grown in the fields.
- Ore: Mined from the mountains.
These resources are generated by rolling dice, with each number corresponding to different terrains on the island. You'll need to collect and trade these resources strategically to expand your settlements and achieve your goals.
How do I win the game?
In CATAN, the race is on to be the first player to reach 10 victory points. But if you accumulate 10 points when it's not your turn, the game is not over. It continues until any player, including yourself, reaches 10 points during their own turn.
- Each settlement is worth 1 victory point, while cities are worth 2.
- The player with the longest continuous road earns 2 victory points.
- The player with the most knight cards played earns 2 victory points.
- Each development card grants 1 victory point.
