WW3: TEAM YANKEE CAMPAIGN 2021 - WORLD ON FIRE : Stage 1

Week 1: Invasion

Prelude

Feldwebel Hans stifled a yawn as he sat in his dugout overlooking the East German border. The operating post was hot and humid as the summer heat sapped all life from the hastily camouflaged position. Despite the temperature, Hans found himself dozing off at his post from the tedious boredom. Taking a swig of tepid water, he wondered if he would get lucky at the gasthaus on his next off day.

The tension between West and East had come to a head in recent days with an impasse in the Euromissile crisis. The Soviet bloc, fuming at NATO's decision to deploy even more missiles in Europe, had threatened to take further action, a familiar repetition of speeches with every change of premiers.

Privately, Hans wondered if the Reds could even follow through with any action given the weakened state of the union, especially with what was going on in the Middle East and their withdrawal at Afghanistan. At least, that was what Der Spiegel was espousing.

Still, prudent as the Bundeswehr tended to be, an increased deployment of border guards was seen as a necessary move to observe any movements from across the line, as well as to intercept possible refugees or otherwise trespassers. As part of the Bundesgrenshutz, Feldwebel Hans was tasked to observe critical crossings. The intensified border patrol schedule was supported by USA troop deployments from the 11th Airborne cavalry in the rear, which promised swift reinforcements if anything were to happen.

A hum was in the air as Hans took another swig from his canteen. Looking around, it certainly wasn't from any nearby vehicles. Impossibly, there was a dust cloud coming from the direction of the East German border. Unhitching his binoculars, Hans swore as he took a closer look.

The Soviets were coming.

Turning to his colleague, Hans uttered:

"Frans, get the radio."

Stage 1

Situation report

The Soviet union has launched a surprise invasion of Germany at the height of the Euromissile crisis. Taken almost unawares, NATO forces must muster whatever reinforcements they can put together to counter the Soviet push towards Bonn and the Rhine. Hardened defenses are not yet ready for the attack and all available forces must race against time to reinforce critical crossings.

In the middle east, the lingering power vacuum caused by the Soviet pullout of Afghanistan has reassured Iran and Iraq that now is their time to reignite the fires of war. Iraq has launched an invasion of Kuwait, while facing a standoff against the Ayatollah's forces at their border. Meanwhile, Israel finds itself under sudden rocket fire as PLO forces, backed by Syrian hardline militia, initiate retaliatory attacks against the now isolated country. The tensions in the middle east have boiled over and if the conflict escalates there will be serious shortages in critical fuel supplies for the fight up north.
