It is said that shisai are in harmony with a kami's purpose, drawing their power directly from it. In contrast, shugenja are believed to take power for themselves, disregarding the cosmic balance. The shisai of Orochi are undeniably devoted to the serpent kami, working to fulfill Orochi’s will. On the other hand, the shugenja may claim Orochi's power for their own gain, yet this seems to cause no displeasure to Orochi. Perhaps such selfish acts align with the serpent kami’s desires after all.
Nanako has been a loyal servant of Orochi since her youth, watching as the Ito came to claim their place at the head of Orochi’s temple. This irks her deeply, for she has fought tooth and nail for every bit of power she has earned. For outsiders to simply rise to Orochi's favor without struggle? That cannot be allowed.
Determined, Nanako has redoubled her efforts, taking from Orochi what the kami would not freely grant her. It was through her persistence that the abominations were born—infusing others with undeserved power, stolen from the great kami.
Some claim that Orochi has rewarded Nanako for her relentless drive, sending a mighty guardian serpent to ensure no one interferes with her work. Others whisper that the serpent is, in fact, a former rival whom Nanako has subjected to her dark practices.
