On May 28 2022, six races came together under the auspices of holy Nuffle to celebrate the game of Blood Bowl. Only these weren’t quite stars, and this wasn’t quite the sacred game as translated by Ancient Roz’el.
Blood Bowl is a miniatures board game created by Jervis Johnson for the British games company Games Workshop as a parody of American football.[1] The game was first released in 1986 and has been re-released in new editions since. Blood Bowl is set in an alternate version of the Warhammer Fantasy setting, populated by traditional fantasy elements such as human warriors, goblins, dwarves, elves, orcs and trolls. This was the seedy Under Leagues of Blood Bowl 7s, where raw ambition and hunger for glory are matched only by the underhand tactics and a vague scent of desperation. The competition played out over three rounds with a travelling coterie of Necromancers making it a Resurrection-style competition, much to the relief of Elves and lightly-clad Lustrians everywhere.
Round 1
Alan’s Amazon Screeching Women
In a violent flurry of scratching and biting, Alan’s Amazon Screeching Women went 2-1 against Michael’s Dark Elves of The Little Ponies, piling both dugouts high with casualties. In complete contrast, Derek’s Dwarf Ironrock Hammers held Kenneth’s Vampire Drakenhof Deadbeats to a goalless draw. So sturdy was the Dwarf defence that a Deadbeats vampire died twice in one half, only to stride nonchalantly back on each time with a casual flick of hair. Lastly, the Orcs of Ben’s Blitzers pulled off a 2-0 win in record time against YQ’s Renegade Chaos Maulers who struggled to get their offence moving due to some truly preposterous luck.

Dereks ironrock hammers
Fresh from their impressive first round victory, the Women surged into the Blitzers but found the tough orcs a harder nut to crack, ending in a 2-2 draw. The Deadbeats pulled off a 1-0 win against the Maulers, who struggled with misfortune once more. At the height of the game the Maulers’ Rat Ogre landed hard on his own fist spike, taking him out of the rest of the competition and crippling his teams’ offence. Meanwhile, the Ponies finally found a gap in the Hammers’ stalwart defence, buying a costly single touchdown with Elven blood for a 1-0 victory.

Kenneths drakenhof dead beats
The final round saw the Deadbeats face off against the top ranked Women. After two games without violent incident to their own side, the Deadbeats’ Vampires finally lost their cool and eliminated a third of their own team, leaving the Women to cruise to a well-deserved 2-0 victory. The Blitzers pulled off a 1-0 win against the increasingly battered Ponies while the Maulers pulled together with a sensational comeback for a convincing 2-0 win against the Hammers.

As the sun set on a satisfyingly gore-spattered pitch, Alan emerged the clear winner with his Amazons with 2 wins and a draw. Ben and his Orcs took second, while Kenneth’s Vampires came third, despite themselves. A great day for the little heroes of amateur Blood Bowl, and a great reason to pick up a team and get in on the next event.
